GWEN
"This record [Return of Saturn] is for me-I'm being selfish. I've been assessing my life over the last couple years-like what am I doing. There are a lot of love songs on the album, but there are others that are about questioning life. 'Six Feet Under' is all about the cycle of life for instance. There is a lot of admission on it; I don't really know who will be able to relate. My dad?"
"I'm like 'Cool, they're really getting into it.' And then all of a sudden it's 'Show me your tits!' I'm up there making a point about how I feel being a chick. Even though maybe the song is not as cool as a Courtney Love song, it IS my life and how I've been meant to feel throughout ten years of being in a man's business, and suddenly they just totally miss the whole point and I just feel like a whore. Like, what am I doing up there in front of all these boys with a little top on? Maybe I'm asking for it, you know?"
"After you make a fool of yourself a few hundred times, you learn what works."
"Adrian's Trying to be like the Sublime Guys."
"Rock Steady is where we are as a band right now, stay the course, keep focused. Like the song says, 'A real love survives, a rock steady vibe.' It could just as well be describing No Doubt, our band, after all these years."
"We were labeled a ska band forever and it was always something we were trying to get away from. We wanted to become our own sound. For the first time on this record [tragic kingdom] I think we were able to do that. To mix up all the different influences without freaking people out."
"I just wanted to be a wife and a mom. This is not what I wanted to be when I grew up."
"yeah, i think we have and it's crazy because we were like the band that sat in the garage and bag like every band that was on the radio and tv. and we were like the bag band and now we just bag on ourselves constantly."
"We know who we really are, and that it can be gone at any moment."
"I was chubby... I wanted to get skinny. I'd wear things that covered up what I didn't like about myself, like baggy pajama pants because I liked the old-men prints,"
"Let's face it, my whole life fell apart last year, My brother left the band and Tony broke up with me; the two most important things in my life. But at the same time, you get the good with the bad. Tragic Kingdom, the album, every song is about Tony basically. There's some really cool songs that came out of the break-up"
"I think he [Tony] started feeling really claustrophobic, and he'd never had any kind of experience, as far as seeing other girls, since he was 16 years old. Of course, he was going out with the raddest girl in the world"
Winning was so great [MTV 1998] I wana win everything from now on in my life.
I like being an individual, I guess that's kinda what fashion is all about. I'm such a girly chick it's stupid.
Fashion is something that everyone is guilty of and you shouldn't really talk about it you should just do it.
TOM
"Success has the potential to poisi on your mind with weird, crappy thoughts. Some people would trade in their girlfriends to go out with some supermodel or something stupid like that. Its a slimy business."
"It's probably easier to have sex to this record than the last"
I wouldn't trade my place for anything, I'm very happy with the role I gwt to play in this band
We in No Doubt have always listened to the radio and
watched MTV, and always wished we could be on the radio and MTV.
We're happy we achieved that and I believe that the concept of selling out
is the concept of a pre-teenager.
"I'm never gonna quit. Especially if someone tells me to."
ADRIAN
"Some people are gonna love it and some people are gonna hate it, but the one thing that I'm really proud of is that it definitely stands out. We have an original sound unlike other groups out now. Whether it sucks or it's good, it's definitely No Doubt."
"I used to be a hard-core partyer. But Mason needs me. I am more cautious about everything now,"
"Tom is obsessed with spending as little money as possible."
TONY
"It's more mature, organic and natural because we were more comfortable as a band. That, and the songs were essentially written with [an] acoustic guitar and vocals, which means that if they are boiled down to their primary and bare roots, they sound great-naked, natural and great. In other words, it's No Doubt at its core"
"Waidaminnut! did i just say farted?"
" We opened ourselves up to trying anything for this record, we are just having fun with it."
